LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) offers undergraduates and recent graduates the opportunity to participate in the gallery’s programming and gain experience at a non-profit arts organization. Internships provide training in areas such as administration, research, archiving, and facility operations. Students interested in art and arts administration will especially benefit from this experience.
Internships require a 3-month commitment, preferably consisting of 2 full-time shifts per week. Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communications skills, a keen attention to detail, and a willingness to work in a hands-on group environment. LACE will work with the intern’s special interests to ensure a positive learning experience.
In appreciation of their service, interns are invited to attend all of LACE’s special events, including openings receptions, artist lectures, and exhibition walkthroughs. Internships also offer school and work study credit.
WE ARE CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2008 IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
Administrative Intern
Attendants will work with the Director of Operations and Administrative Assistant to carry out the day-to-day operations of gallery offices. Interns will also have the opportunity to interact directly with visitors and artists during gallery hours and special events. This position provides a point of entry to contemporary art and offers an excellent introduction to nonprofit arts administration. Responsibilities include: . updating database and email lists. . performing clerical duties, including answering phone calls, sorting mail, and
responding to general inquiries.
. researching artists and relevant information for upcoming publications
. greeting visitors and educating the public about LACE’s programming.
. tracking gallery attendance and ensuring quality of visitors’ experience through
facility maintenance.
. performing day-to-day duties, including opening/ closing gallery, tracking
attendance, facility maintenance, and assisting during special events. Requirements include:
. Familiarity with Macintosh applications.
. Technical experience (a/v operation) and knowledge of Illustrator and
Photoshop is desired.
. Must be interested in contemporary art and willing to learn about current and
upcoming LACE exhibitions.
. Evening and weekend assistance may be requested during special events.
Communications Intern
Communications intern will assist the Executive Director and Administrative team in the promotion of organization’s programs. This position offers the opportunity to gain experience in community- building and public relations in a non-profit arts organization, and requires an independent and detail-oriented applicant with excellent writing and communication skills. Responsibilities include:
. updating press list.
. creating and distributing promotional materials, press releases, and calendar of
events.
. reviewing and archiving press articles related to organization.
. researching artists relevant to upcoming events and publications.
. greeting visitors and educating the public about LACE’s programming.
. tracking gallery attendance and ensuring quality of visitors’ experience through
facility maintenance.
. performing day-to-day duties, including opening/ closing gallery, tracking
attendance, facility maintenance, and assisting during special events. Requirements include:
. Knowledge of Macintosh applications. Familiarity with Illustrator and Photoshop
is desired.
. Must be interested in contemporary art and willing to learn about current and
upcoming LACE exhibitions.
. Evening and weekend assistance may be requested during special events.
Development Intern
Development Intern will assist Assistant Director with fundraising and membership-related matters. This detail-oriented position offers a thorough introduction to event-based fundraising, marketing, and outreach. Excellent organizational and written skills are mandatory for this position. Responsibilities include:
. managing patron database.
. composing and mailing out solicitation, thank you, and donation letters.
. working directly with the Assistant Director to foster donor and board support.
. assisting in the planning of major LACE events.
. soliciting donations from vendors and partner agencies during LACE’s annual
art auction.
. greeting visitors and educating the public about LACE’s programming.
. tracking gallery attendance and ensuring quality of visitors’ experience through
facility maintenance.
. performing day-to-day duties, including opening/ closing gallery, tracking
attendance, facility maintenance, and assisting during special events. Requirements include:
. Knowledge of Macintosh applications.
. Must be interested in contemporary art and willing to learn about current and
upcoming LACE exhibitions.
. Evening and weekend assistance may be requested during special events.
Archive Intern
Archive Intern will assist Administrative team with the management of archival material. Intern must be detail-oriented and highly organized. This position offers the opportunity to gain experience in about database management and archive systems in an arts organization. Responsibilities include:
. managing and organizing event and image database.
. assisting Administration with long-term archiving projects.
. formatting and digitizing images.
. interacting directly with visitors and educating the public about LACE’s
programming.
. undergoing training on FileMaker and content management software.
. tracking gallery attendance and ensuring quality of visitors’ experience through
facility maintenance.
. performing day-to-day duties, including opening/ closing gallery, tracking
attendance, facility maintenance, and assisting during special events. Requirements include:
. Knowledge of Macintosh applications. Familiarity with FileMaker is a plus.
. Must be interested in contemporary art and willing to learn about current and
upcoming LACE exhibitions.
. Evening and weekend assistance may be requested during special events.
*LACE gladly accepts the help of volunteers during gallery hours and special events, with no long-term commitment requirement. Students must have work-study funding in order to be paid. All may apply for volunteer and unpaid internship status.
